Mauritius photoshoot guide · Andy Michel
Wear something that feels like you.
The best outfit for a Mauritius photoshoot is one you can move in comfortably and still recognise yourself in. The beach, tropical heat, wind and changing light all matter, but clothes should support the photographs rather than become the main event.
There is no dress code. A relaxed linen shirt, a simple dress, shorts, a skirt or something more dressed-up can all work. What matters most is that the colours, fabrics and fit suit the location and that you are comfortable enough to walk, sit, laugh and move naturally.
If you are choosing between several outfits, simple usually photographs better than complicated. Think about the people in the pictures together, rather than treating every outfit separately.
Mauritius heat
Light, breathable
fabrics
Natural, lightweight fabrics are usually the easiest choice for an outdoor session. Linen, cotton and other breathable fabrics tend to feel more comfortable in warm conditions and move naturally when there is a breeze.
Heavy layers can become uncomfortable quickly, especially if the session includes walking along the beach or moving between different backgrounds.
Work with the setting
Colours
Soft neutrals, earth tones, blues, greens and warm colours can all work beautifully against sand, sea and tropical vegetation. Strong colour can also be very effective when it is intentional and suits the person wearing it.
You do not need to dress in beige just because the session is on a beach. The goal is balance: enough contrast to stand out from the background without making the clothes fight for attention.
Couples & families
Coordinate.
Do not clone.
For couples and families, outfits usually look more natural when the colours relate to one another without being identical. Choose a small palette and let each person wear a version that suits them.
Matching white shirts and identical trousers can look more staged than necessary. A coordinated mix of tones and textures usually gives the group more personality.
Keep the attention on you
Patterns
& logos
Very busy patterns, large logos and bold branding can pull attention away from faces and expressions. They can also date a photograph more quickly than simpler clothing.
Patterns are not forbidden. One patterned piece can work well, especially if the other outfits are quieter. The aim is simply to avoid several competing prints in the same frame.
Let the island move
Wind
& movement
Mauritius can be breezy, and that can be an advantage. Dresses, skirts, loose shirts and lightweight fabrics can create movement in a photograph instead of fighting the wind.
If you know you dislike hair or fabric moving, choose something with a little more structure. If you like a more relaxed, cinematic feel, flowing fabric can work beautifully.
